Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 beta 2

Microsoft opened up testing of Internet Explorer 8 beta 2.The new beta includes a number of new security features, including protection against cross-site scripting attacks and a phishing and malware filter called the SmartScreen filter.

The browser itself is also undergoing some user-friendly changes. The search bar can now be programmed with a number of services like Wikipedia and Amazon in addition to favorites like Google and Yahoo. You can also change the size of the search bar.

In InPrivate Browsing, you basically begin a new private browsing session from the new tab button. In this mode, all of your visited sites, browsing history and cookies files aren’t stored on the computer and that third parties can't track online behavior.

If the browser crashes despite IE's new security features, Microsoft has included improved crash recovery in the new beta. If a crash is detected, the effected browser tab or tabs automatically reload, including any information that had been filled in on forms on the crashed pages. Users can even reload lost tabs or an entire browser session if accidentally closed, because IE keeps track of the most recently closed tabs.

You can download the latest trial version of the browser here.

Google Suggest will affect on Google search soon

Another search feature is set to move out of Google Lab Google Suggest for search. Google Suggest designed to make queries more efficient and accurate by offering suggestions based on what a user has already typed, offering recommendations from the most popular search options for the term.

Google Suggest is a frontend to Google which will offer suggestions to search for as you type your query. When you type a keyword, a dropdown list will appear with terms beginning with what you have typed and how many results they will yield if you select to search for them. You can use your up/down arrow keys to select one of these suggestions. Alternatively, you can use your mouse to select an option, and initiate the search by clicking on the option.

The number of spelling errors will drop; and whilst this is great for users, it will affect traffic for sites who aim to capitalise on misspelled words through SEO and PPC campaigns. Additionally, as Google will make suggestions based on terms that best satisfy an algorithm, it won't be long before someone tries to manipulate the terms that appear on Google Suggest to their own advantage.

Intel's wireless electric power

Intel showed off a wireless electric power system. Electricity was sent wirelessly to a lamp on stage, lighting a 60 watt bulb that uses more power than typical laptop computer. The electricity was transmitted without zapping anything or anyone that got between the sending and receiving units.

intel claims that the technology could also be built into plugged in computer components, such as monitors, to enable them to broadcast power to devices left on desks or carried into rooms.

“The trick with wireless power is not can you do it; it’s can you do it safely and efficiently,” Intel researcher Josh Smith said in an online video explaining the breakthrough.

“It turns out the human body is not affected by magnetic fields; it is affected by elective fields. So what we are doing is transmitting energy using the magnetic field not the electric field.”

Previous wireless power systems consisted basically of firing lightning bolts from sending to receiving units.

Recycle your old mobile phones and make new products

Recent consumer survey of Nokia shows that only 3% of people recycle their old mobile phones. Very few are being thrown away instead the majority are simply kept at home and never used.

Nokia claims that 80% of any Nokia device is recyclable and precious materials within it can be reused to help make new products such as kitchen kettles, park benches, dental fillings or even saxophones and other metal musical instruments. Plastic that can’t be recycled are burnt to provide energy for the recycling process, and other materials are ground up into chips and used as construction materials or for building roads.

The survey revealed that one of the main reasons why so few people recycle their mobile phones is because they simply don't know that it is possible to do so.

Online attacks

Recent report shows that online threats are becoming more advanced, while threats on the mobile platform and in virtual worlds are also increasing.

Online threat

if you’re online, bots such as Trojans or worms can be installed on your computer through a loophole in your software that you haven’t patched, through shareware you’ve downloaded, or through an e-mail attachment. These bots can be used to take remote control of your machine for various potentially harmful actions—displaying ads, monitoring your browsing behavior, launching a denial-of-service attack, hosting a phishing site, or capturing your keystrokes (these bots are called keyloggers) to record information such as usernames, passwords, and credit-card details.

Spam threat

Clicking any link sent to you in a spam message is known to lead you to malicious websites or phishing websites. However, if you have an email account with content filtering—something that’s almost default these days—chances are you can ignore spam completely.

Gaming threat

Virtual worlds and multiplayer online games are emerging areas for threats. Theft of passwords and game resources is becoming widespread in the gaming world.

Mobile threat

Vishing, akin to phishing, but executed through phone calls to your mobile number, has made an appearance, and is likely to grow. As more applications find their way to the mobile platform, malicious hackers are sure to follow, to find out how to exploit security loopholes.

The followings are the steps for reducing online attacks

Install patches regularly for the software on your computer. Failure to install patches released by the software manufacturer results in your computer being vulnerable to malicious hacker attacks.

Update your antivirus software regularly and scan your system at regular intervals.

Install good anti-spyware software and use it to scan your computer.

Avoid downloading shareware or other interactive programs from unknown sites.

Be careful of who you speak to online and on your mobile phone. You should not reveal sensitive personal information to any caller, as a reply to an email message, or enter such information by clicking a link in an email sent to you. All these could be part of phishing or vishing attacks.

Intel's Larrabee

Intel is revealing new details on its forthcoming Larrabee chip. The first product based on Larrabee will target the personal computer graphics market and is expected in 2009 or 2010.Larrabee will be the industry's first many-core x86.Intel architecture, meaning it will be based on an array of many processors. The individual processors are similar to the Intel processors that power the Internet and the laptops, PCs and servers that access and network to it.

The Larrabee native programming model supports a variety of highly parallel applications, including those that use irregular data structures. This enables development of graphics APIs, rapid innovation of new graphics algorithms, and true general purpose computation on the graphics processor with established PC software development tools.

Intel says that with its Larrabee architecture developers can simply program in C or C++ languages for just as they would for any other x86 processor. According to Intel, the ability to program Larrabee with C or C++ makes it much easier for developers to port applications from other platforms to the Larrabee architecture.

Kaspersky Mobile Security

Kaspersky one of the world's most appreciated antivirus solutions provider, announced the release of Kaspersky Mobile Security 7.0, a new product that offers integrated protection for Smartphones running Windows Mobile and Symbian.

Kaspersky Mobile Security incorporates a function to wipe a lost or stolen mobile phone. If the original SIM card stays in the phone, the legal owner can send a prearranged text message by SMS, to block the phone until the correct password is input. Alternatively, he can remotely delete all the data held on it. The software also allows coupling the SIM card with the data stored on the phone. Once this is done, if a different SIM card is inserted, the contacts, appointments and documents stored on the mobile phone are locked and can no longer be accessed. Kaspersky says that optionally, when the new card is inserted, the original owner can have an SMS sent to a specified number telling him the new number that has been assigned to the phone.

Kaspersky Mobile Security 7.0 scans network connections and incoming files in real-time and can perform anti-virus scans of the whole Smartphone either instantly, on demand, or on schedule. The software can also block messages from incorrect or unwanted numbers. It can even block SMS messages that contain words or phrases undesired by users and previously entered into a blacklist.

Skyfire Beta Mobile Browser

Skyfire's mobile browser is now available in private beta for Symbian S60 handsets. Skyfire uses compression and a proxy-based technology to deliver full featured (Flash 9, Quicktime, Java, AJAX) web pages to phones. With this browser, users could visit sites like YouTube, Facebook, and Pandora from a mobile phone and use all the features, instead of settling for a stripped-down mobile version.

This browser allows full-screen navigation, thumbnail views, and zooming to resize content for the mobile phone's screen. Skyfire works by having a proxy server sit between your browsing and the Internet. When you load a web page you send a request to Skyfire servers. Skyfire uses their proprietary technology, part of which is built on top of Mozilla's Firefox, to load the requested page and then sends it to your phone in a compressed Skyfire format. The Skyfire client running on the phone interprets this format and shows you the web page. A crucial extra compared to other proxy based browsers (e.g. Opera Mini) is the ability to fully interact with a page (e.g. AJAX functions, as used by many Web 2.0 sites).
