ALIPR search photos based on their contents

A pair of Penn State researchers has come up with a statistical approach that may one day make Internet searches for photographs quite easier. The tool they use for this purpose is called Automatic Linguistic Indexing of Pictures in Real-Time (ALIPR).

ALIPR works by teaching computers to recognize the contents of photographs, such as buildings, people, or landscapes, rather than by searching for keywords in the surrounding text, as is done with most current image-retrieval systems.

The public can participate in improving ALIPR's accuracy by visiting a designated Web site www.alipr.com, uploading photographs, and evaluating whether the keywords that ALIPR uses to describe the photographs are appropriate.

Forget charging batteries Toshiba offer fast-charging fuel cell

Battery life in a cellphone is a major problem, with the best offering just three to four hours of talk time. Forget charging batteries Toshiba is close to launching its first commercial direct-methanol fuel-cell (DMFC) device, which promises a faster way to recharge portable electronics product.

DMFCs produce electricity from a reaction between methanol, water and air. The only byproducts are a small amount of water vapour and carbon dioxide, so DMFCs are often seen as a greener source of energy than traditional batteries. Another advantage is that they can be replenished with a new cartridge of methanol in seconds.

Toshiba claim that a 50ml cartridge could refill the cell about 15 times, which means that about 3.3 mL of liquid methanol is enough to power the phone for twice as long as comparable batteries.

SocialBrowse open to all and add new features

SocialBrowse the link-sharing service has launched its service to the public beta along with some new features. SocialBrowse allows you to share any website with your friends and contacts with the click of a button, which is added to your Firefox or Flock browser.

Users can view these links through the SocialBrowse homepage, a Firefox sidebar, or as tiny icons embedded on webpages. Whenever a user shares a link, a miniature version of their profile picture is embedded inline as part of the link on the page itself, so any members that visit the same site will be able to quickly see which pages their friends have found interesting.

The new features include supports in-page commenting, which allows you to leave comments on a link you’re visiting without having to leave the page. Submitting a comment, just as with a shared link, will broadcast your content across the Web in real time. Comment icons will also appear on pages you visit so you and your friends will immediately be able to see the connection between your own activity and that of your friends.

An interesting visual tool accompanies the socialbrowse sidebar, offering a very direct and internally circular view of the Web as well as your own browsing behavior. This of course can be turned into immediate recommendations as well as useful information regarding a particular site that may be more difficult or time-consuming to find otherwise via standalone bookmarking sites.
